What is Rabbit Fever?

Rabbit Fever in El Paso County | Pine Creek Veterinary HospitalMany of you may have seen a recent news report about Rabbit Fever in El Paso county and undoubtedly have questions.  Rabbit Fever is due to a bacterium called Francisella tularensis aka Tularemia.   I have included a link (click here) to a website hosted by the American Veterinary Medical Association with accurate information regarding this disease   The concern we have currently is the noticeable rabbit population boom this year and thus an increased risk of transmission to both people and pets.   I have also included links below with further information regarding Tularemia

http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/tularemia/basics/definition/con-20028009

Although this may seem scary, consider only about 200 human cases of tularemia occur each year in the United States.
